Inequality, Trust, and Growth: An Experimental Study

چکیده
In a three player dynamic public goods experiment, social output today determines production possibilities tomorrow. In each period, players choose to sabotage, to co-operate, or to play best response. Sabotage harms social output and growth. Mutual co-operation maximises both. The property rights to social output are distributed unequally. Extent and skew of inequality are varied. Empirical studies indicate a negative impact of inequality on trust and growth. We observe equilibrium play in most cases. There is also substantial cooperation, but little sabotage. Our exogenous variations of inequality are neutral to growth, neither negatively correlated to co-operation, nor positively correlated to sabotage.

The Dynamic Interplay of Inequality and Trust - An Experimental Study∗
We study the interplay of inequality and trust in a dynamic growth game, in which trust increases efficiency and thus allows higher growth of the laboratory economy in the future. We find that trust is initially high in a treatment starting with equal endowments, but decreases over time. In a treatment with unequal endowments, trust is initially lower yet remains relatively stable. The reason i...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of the Effects of Inequality and Relative Deprivation on Trusting Behavior
Several non-experimental studies report that income inequality and other forms of population-based heterogeneity reduce levels of trust in society. However, recent work by Glaeser et al. (2000) calls into question the reliability of widely used survey-based measures of trust. Specifically, survey responses regarding trust attitudes did not reflect subjects’ actual behavior in a trust game. In t...

متن کاملThe Self-Fulfilling Property of Trust: An Experimental Study
A person is said to be `trust responsive' if she fulfils trust because she believes the truster trusts her. The experiment we report was designed to test for trust responsiveness and its robustness across payoff structures, and to discriminate it from other possible factors making for trustworthiness, including perceived kindness, perceived need, and inequality aversion. We elicit the truster's...
